BSSF World Cup Race 5&6

by vickie pullin

Last big race of the winter for me and what a race to Finnish on….

Luna bike

Axel and apollo scooter

Luka, Vax, Tove and Rio 4 dog rig

First out was the bike, with 3 clean over takes and an almost floorless run from Luna we took the lead after day one, with a time that beat all the guys too (buzzing) then next up was the 4 dog and what a blast we had clean run and sub 9 mins. Absolutely blown away by the team – fastest time of the weekend. Fantastic run from the kids. So after all the excitement my final run with the sibs nervous did not even come close – the boys have been improving all winter but still young and I just wasn’t sure how they would run on the grass trails (heavy going) well should have never doubted them…. just unbeleavable run with overtakes and no problems …. 1st place after day one.

So day 2 we have to do it all again – my legs felt heavy in the morning warming up and ground was wet from some overnight showers – miKe stone pipped us by a few seconds today awesome race and we finished first over all. Then the 4 dog again another perfect run from the team holding the lead, awesome fun! Then to Finnish the boys…. well after been blown away after day one, they only went and ran even batter day 2 and was 10 seconds of the bronze hound team. Couldn’t beleave that – just keep getter better and better

This weekend the dogs did everything we train hard for and it all paid off. I am privileged to own such amazing dogs and it’s such an honour to run them. Every time left speechless and so so thankful for great dogs

Thanks for everyone who supported me this season and made all this happen

German championships

by vickie pullin

So the team headed out to France to train and race the snow – which went off to a good start training 5 hounds on the sled (too much fun).

On day 3 the news came of our race been cancelled due to lack of snow, absolutely gutted And desperately trying to find another race or plan it sounded like Europe was struggling all over, but then luck had it we could get a race over at the German champs. So 8 hour drive it was then. We did one last training day packed up and hit the road…..

Driving in Germany we found out the race was 10.8k which for my team is a long way, after much thought I decided to run the euros at the front tov and vax and then the greysters at the back and leave Rio out for this one as she is young and it was too far for her. My plan was if too much for the dogs then we simply stop. But there was no need for the that- over the 3 days the dogs did epic. Proud does not even come close.

Day 1. Mission to get round safely. Mission complete. One small tangle other than that no problems. Super chuffed and a bonus we were sat in second.

Day 2. We ended up catching 1st very quickly and then the dogs worked really hard chasing – we went for the over take but the dogs opted for a snow dip to cool off. I pulled up and let the dogs catch a breath then set of again. Again catching 1st but again dogs looking hot and working hard so made the call to stop for a while. Once we set off again 1st was no where to be seen but this was a good thing as it meant the team could run in safely and complete another clean run. Today I learnt a lot about my dogs and how hard they work and how best to race them. I should have over took sooner and just let them run holding he brakes increased work load and made life hard for my team. Once I got in and checked all dogs I spend all afternoon rehydrating and making sure he team would be fit for day 3 as this was a long race. So much fluid I was up most of the night dropping dogs – totally worth it.

Day 3. Mission to complete the race safely. So after the first 2k we had a near miss with an on coming team (everyday a school day!) but all ok and no tangles then we saw 1st place, we got so close last 2k and then the dogs try to cut the corner (Training needed) to catch them and we got stuck in the deep snow. After recovering the team and sorting a tangle and checking the dogs for the first time in the 3 days I thought right team we have a race to do…. with only about 1k left and dogs looking awesome it was suddenly all the play for. So we set of with no sign of 1st place and jay ran or hearts out. The dogs were epic and completed the race so strong with wagging tails – I was over the moon and greeted with the team ahead, we congratulated each other and praised the dogs on the finish line and headed back to the van to sort the dogs out. Later on I was told we had won the race by 2 seconds I was absolutely over the moon, a huge bonus to an already fantastic race. To win first on the snow was unreal and the greysters first race on snow. Just love my dogs too much. Absolutely amazed with what they achieved and had so much fun sharing it with them.

BSSF World Cup Race 3&4

So we headed of to Wales for the next set of BSSF races which gives me World Cup points and points towards a British ranking bvo2gir.

We have been busy training the dogs more than humans over the last month (Christmas gains!!!) and have switched things up with the team doing some more weight training and upping the distance. The young dogs are really starting to grow into themselves now.

I ran Vax, Tova, Rio and Luka on the 4 dog class who blew my mind.  Absolutely perfect they were so epic and just too much fun to run. Bringing in both days the fastest times of the weekend.

The the French boys on the scooter …. wow how over the last few months these boys have build confiedence – they were the fastest Nordic breed scooter and 3rd over all in open. First day they dodged cars and the second day we had the gang line un clip but the dogs took everything in there stride. Love running these boys together. They get the best out of each other and you can watch that as they run.

Bike – my girl Luna, what a dog, not much more to say really. 2 smooth over takes on her behalf and a crash on my behalf … need to work on my skills!! She got us the second fastest times of the weekend behind the 4 dog.

This weekend it was 100% all my dogs. Just every time out they impress me more than last time when you don’t even think that’s possible. Thanks dogs for the best weekend, and everyone else who makes this possible best task manager. All my handlers and Russco for looking after the rest of the team at home.

European Championships

by vickie pullin

WSA European championships Germany and IFSS European Championships Thetford UK.To have 2 weekends running the young race dogs and to get round the course was just awesome enough on its own – to bring home 3 bronze medals was an absolute bonus. Axel and Apollo raced there first race in Germany and Apollo got the fastest time of the weekend day 2 bringing us up into the medals. Could not have been a prouder moment and this is his first race, these boys have been such a pleasure to bring up from pups. This weekend they ran 2 dog scooter and came 3rd in the Nordic class absolutely over the moon. The bike was maybe my proudest result of the weekend with Luna. We came home 7th in the end but day one sitting in 4th with 13 seconds to first, what a dog. Luna has blown me away just digging hard and the effort she puts in for me – need to step my game up again!!! 4 dog kart, rio leading my team in her second race ever, just amazes me what these dogs can do. Its such a pleasure to be able to share a sport with your dogs. 2 big international races for me and every team finished in top 10 in Europe. Absolute bonus to fantastic dogs. Best dogs in the world. Dogs leave me speechless #zerodc #krossuk #pullinpower

BSSF World Cup Race

by vickie pullin

My dogs rock my world – Yukon came out with me on the bike and we took home the gold, she’s such an amazing girl 😍. Then for the first time ever I ran some pups on the 4 dog. My oldest dog was Tova (not even 2 yet) Rio had her first race and then Luka & Luna’s 2nd race…… So day one Luka decided he wanted to have sex with tova half way round (this didn’t happen) but his timing was awesome at the top of a hill, so after trying to de tangle 4 hounds I then got taken on my ass all the way down the hill where we had to sort ourselves out again….. But we did it and training payed off, and we carried on to Finnish in 3rd. Then the next day I changed Tova to front and Luka at the back ……. This was a good plan, dogs were so so awesome a few things to work on as expected but I could not have been happier and to put the icing on it all they got the fastest time on the 5k route of the weekend. Just love your dogs train hard play hard and have fun …… I have too much love for all my dogs #pullinpower #zerodc #krossuk #gym&tonic

ECF championships

by vickie pullin

ECF done and proud of my dogs does not even come close. 5th scooter and we moved up to 15th bike Sunday . My pups were fantastic and I hope this is the start of great things. Chaz bought home a rapid 11th place in the masters bike. Pullin power dogs are the best. #pullinpower #zerodc #krossuk #gym&tonic #russ thanks for everyone’s support and Russ for looking after the crew at home. Totally buzzing thanks everyone who makes this possible

In the search for marginal gains, weight becomes critical especially on a course that boasts 6 hill climbs. Me and Luka were lucky enough to use the new super lightweight Bulla scooter to race. This bad boy made in Russia weighs in at 6.3kg, nearly half a stone lighter than our kickbike!! We think it certainly helped bring the team to a respectable 5th place in the Euros, amidst a raft of Czech athletes.

The scooter wasn’t twitchy and with a great rolling speed, but we haven’t used more than 1 dog as yet.

A full review of the Bulla (the lightest scooter on the market) will be in the December issue of Sled Dog World. Oh and did we mention it comes with a cool custom paint job??

I will be using the scooter at Thetford so if you want to get a sneaky first look come and find us!

Race Prep:

by vickie pullin

So finally into race season after a busy summer …

Next week we head to Czech Republic for the ECF – European Canicross Federation Championships where I will bike Luna, scoot Luka and chaz will bike with Vax.

We have trained hills human and dogs, we have modified kit and done everything we feel we could have to prep for this race… Now for the super fun part race day!!! Long journey across Europe first leaving Monday and racing next weekend – watch this space!!!

First Race of the season 2016/17

by vickie pullin

Racing not for competition with all the pups as we wanted some experience before heading out to Czech in a few weeks.
So first race for everyone and this is how it went:

Axel & Apollo, 2 dog Scooter – First 2 miles, awesome and the boys were fantastic, we got over taken by a 2 dog hound team but hung on there tail until I had a disagreement with a corner – hitting the ground hard, the boys looked at me…”what you doing mum” so I jumped up, caught my breath and we carried on, then less then half a mile from home, I made the call to stop and let the dogs have a paddle in the lake, I have never done this before in a race, but felt it was warm and the dogs would benefit more from the stop than trying to ask them to run home, we had a small splash and drink, chance for us all to get our breath and then the sprint home. Super proud of my boys for there first outing, they we perfect. We have some things to work on, which is great like turning on wet grass, that maybe more for me and less for the dogs! The time for the boys even with a paddle in the lake was a great effort and I can not tell you enough how excited I am for the future of these boys. My “A” Team!

I decided not to run these guys Sunday as warmer and although they did shorten the course, these sibs give me everything they have and with that extra coat on, running was not needed! We had play time instead!
Luka -Sat: 1 dog scooter, my boy did great, I stayed on 2 feet, we ran a great course, this boy needs a little more experience on his own but think the guys usually take a little longer than the ladies (sorry boys!) to develop. He is so focused on me and listening to what I want, I really am starting to trust him and love the relationship we are building up whist working, just brings you so much closer to the dogs, and getting inside there heads, its awesome. He is awesome.

Sun: 1 dog Bike, I ran the bike the next day to help lighten the load with the warmer weather, we were a little off his sister but watching the videos back, I know where we can get that time back (corners and directions) but again this will come over time, super chuffed with Luka, building his confidence everyday and always getting stronger.
Luna, 1 Dog Bike, After seeing the amount of wildlife from my first leg and the fact I had raced the course twice already on the scooter, I was apprehensive as to how this would go – should never have doubted it, Luna was awesome, everything we are training for, she listened she ran well, sure there were mistakes (not to name names: ME!!!) falling off the new bike which by the way was EPIC!!!!!! (huge thanks to KROSS UK) but even with a fall we still nailed the fastest time of the day – Exciting times ahead, also with me a little more on the brakes day 2, same again we got the fastest time of the day and this time amazingly stayed on 2 wheels, admittedly only just but we hung in there! (it was really wet grass on reverse cambers)
So to sum up, could not be happier with the teams first efforts, I know what we need to go and work on, where training has worked and what to build on, but most of all, had a fantastic weekend running my dogs!
Chaz ran her first race for Pullin Power this weekend and what a start to her racing career, sat, small set back of kissing the ground – and then losing and braking the back wheel so small walk home for her and Vax. Buzzing from everything up to that point Sunday could only go one way – she smashed it and got the fastest female bike time of the day (apart from me) so proud of these ladies, they made a great team, Vax was awesome and all the hard work Chaz has put into this summer is paying off. Great job team.
Russ – the man holding everything together at home, or should I say, the team at home all looked after Russ for the weekend!!! Either way blasts out in the field, chill time and time just been dogs was super nice for the team at home, lots of cuddles and play! What more could a dog want! Thanks Russ, great job buddy.

Huge thanks to all my friends that helped handle and all my sponsors who make it possible for me and my team to even get to these races.
Kross the new bike is unreal, and everyone needs this in there life and Zero DC the new harness’s are fantastic, dogs looked epic, but more importantly ran awesome in them, with no problems and a great fit, super light weight and fast sprint harness!

K9 Trail time thanks for hooking me up with some toys for the team to play with in the day, they loved them, so massive hit there, thank you!

Kross UK

Today was the day…. My new Kross bike has arrived and just in time for the first race of the season.

Massive thanks to Kross UK for there support and helping build this epic bike for me and my dogs. Super excited to ride Christmas has come early. Great bikes (The best!) . Fantastic value for money. Can not recommend enough, real privilege to be working with these guys. Thank you Kross uk
